What Avenues People Are Saying...

Cornwall Park Spring Avenues
Our Spring Avenues today was a bit of a change from the elaborate Spring Flower Festivals of recent years - but in its own way a reminder of the gentle prompting of Jesus in our lives - to bring new hope, fresh starts, new growth, changes in subtle small steps - moving us ever closer to being the people God wants us to be. Taking the time to walk around Cornwall Park, stopping to watch the baby lambs frolicking, the daffodils down Twin Oaks Drive, hearing the roosters crowing all made for a refreshing reprieve in what has been a long wet winter in Auckland this year.

Avenues at the museum
Avenues at the museum had us looking at fossils that were 580 million years old. Well, that was the age of the oldest ones we found in the museum. Looking back in time for me is a bit the same as observing the stars. (Actually, when you think about looking at stars is looking back in time!) However, the similarity to me is in the sense of awe that they both inspire. The scientific endeavour to understand the unfolding of life through millions of years, though still shrouded in much mystery, reveals much about the God who stands at the back of it all. Thanks Julie for organising such an interesting programme.

Stardome Adventure
Wow! What an inspirational evening about our creative and designer God. The event at the stardome was a reminder of the mystery and majesty of God. There is no end to the universe, there are more galaxies out there than can be counted! We heard about trillions and trillions of light years... It is breathtaking! What did you think?

The Avenues Journey
Our Avenues journey has included various attempts to conect with people of all ages, with those who have little or no understanding of the Christian journey, as well as those who are new to the faith and those who have been followers of Jesus for years. In our dreams for Avenues, we want to encourage each other in our faith and in our journey, in ways that supports daily life and encourages us all to become more like Jesus. The idea that we support each other on our faith journey is not a new one... it surely dates back to the days that followed that terrible Friday, when Jesus died on the cross. Disciples and followers of Jesus gathered then, and in the days that followed, and have continued to gather ever since, in churches and in small groups, across the world and across the centuries. So, if gathering with other followers of Jesus is not a new idea, what is different about Avenues? It is an attempt to discover Jesus, believe in Jesus and connect with Jesus in ways that are relevant for the culture we live in today. It is an attempt to create a place of belonging for those on the journey of faith. While many people in our society, feel very comfortable and refreshed going along to a conventional church, it just isn't that way for others. At Avenues, we want to affirm the place of the existing churches in our community, working hard to share the love of Jesus to the world, while at the same time offer an alternative and fresh church experience for those who seek to follow Jesus, but struggle with the conventional models of church. All kinds of labels have been put on what we do; emergent, post-modern, fresh expression, alt worship... to name a few. We try to avoid the labels, because words create impressions in people's minds from their own past experiences. How to define us? Maybe you have to come along to find out.

I find Avenues pretty interesting. I have travelled all over the world and experiences I have had with these people in Auckland somehow impact the experiences I've have as I travel. Like, when I went to Israel and stood on the Mount of Olives, I remembered our experience in the Olive Grove at One Tree Hill when we took part in a role play and imagined Jesus' loneliness, betrayal, and being left by his once faithful followers. Somehow this added incredible depth when I stood perhaps very close to where Jesus was betrayed. I can't help but wonder, will I follow Jesus to the end? Will I be faithful in prayer? Will my love for him last when the going gets tough?

Last Easter I ate freshly cooked fish on the beach at Manly (Whangaparoa), and thought back to the day I had fish around the Sea of Galilee. It was an incredible experience. And watching the sunrise together, we thought of Jesus' appearing to his followers and showing that he was alive again. Life after death. Proof that we will live again... death is not the end. A amazing experience. I can't want till we have our BBQ breakfast at sunrise this year! Yippee! Count me in!!
