An Avenues Season of Seuss

Reading a Dr Seuss book is a bit like going on a journey.  For one thing it’s a journey for your tongue as you twist your way around the turns of phrase and gobbledygook words that characterize a Seuss book.  For another thing, Seuss often has characters that are on the move.  The energy of his artwork suggest that his characters are impatient to get to the next page.  Whether it is the fox in his socks, the cat in his hat or the sneetches on the beaches, his characters are generally moving somewhere.   In the next few weeks we use some of the Seuss stories to help us ourselves move somewhere with God.   Don’t be fooled into thinking this is a series for children and adults can tag along – this is classic all age and all stage Avenues. You can’t be too old or too young to take something away from this season of Seuss.  In themselves, the books of Dr Seuss are not spiritual books, full of spiritual truth.  But they do provide us with a creative and entertaining starting point to consider what God is wanting in our lives, beyond the place we are standing right now.  One of my favourite Seuss stories is, ‘I had trouble in getting to Solla Sollew’ In that story the main character spends the entire book journeying in search of something elusive yet wonderful, only to find it was with him all the time, way back at the beginning and he hadn’t stopped long enough to see it, find it, appreciate it!   I hope we all have some time in the next few weeks to search and find.  – Caroline
