AVENUES BIRTHDAY 3.00pm 21 June AT 29 The Circle Manly Whangaparaoa AUCKLAND
Prayer and Pizza – An event around the start of each year is a stations-based prayer programme in a small historical church overlooking a lonely rugged West Coast view followed by freshly cooked pizza from the pizza oven of one of our Avenues families.
Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper – A stations based event with a shared meal of pancakes together as we reflect on the beginning of Lent. We usually meet in someone’s home and everyone brings along a topping to share. We share a reflection and prayer together.
Garden of Gethsemene – A vigil in an Olive Grove on Maundy Thursday as we imagine ourselves with Jesus and the disciples at the Last Supper and in the lonely hours in the Garden of Gethsemene. Held at dusk as the shadows of the last rays of sun fade into darkness, we find Jesus coming alongside us in our own struggles as we come alongside him in his final hours before Good Friday. Sunrise Fish Breakfast – We begin Easter Sunday with a beach setting communion as the sunrises followed by an Easter egg hunt and a barbeque fish breakfast as we recall the time Jesus appeared to his disciples on the beach and cooked them a fish meal.
Spring Flower Festival – An occasional event where we decorate a hired space such as an empty shop with a worship installation of spring flowers and create a space in which regulars and the public can interact with the beauty of God’s creation and celebrate a fresh spring awakening of God in their lives.
In the Rose Garden – A walk and talk with God through the roses in the Parnell Rose Garden followed by a picnic Devonshire tea amongst the roses.
Come to the Quiet – Amongst the Christmas bustle we hold a quiet evening event over a few hours with candles and fairy lights in a darkened chapel and softly playing instrumental Christmas music. There are no words, no beginning and no end. Participants come and go as they are feel comfortable.
Community Carols – Set at the very beautifully Christmas decorated home of one of our Avenues families, we invite the neighbours of their street as well as friends and families of Avenues. We sing carols outdoors together and have an impromptu nativity play before inviting everyone through the doors to enjoy the Christmas display.
